Statement of the DUA Women Leaders' Conference held in Accra, Ghana on 5 & 6 January 2008
 

The Democrat Union of Africa (DUA), representing both ruling and opposition parties with centre and centre right policies, gathered from 5 & 6 January 2008 at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana for the DUA Women Leaders’ Conference;

Having received and discussed country reports from individual member political parties on the status of the respective parties and democracy in their nations; we unanimously agreed to issue the following statement in support of our sisters in Kenya:

We note with grave concern the violent and unstable political climate in Kenya in the aftermath of the Presidential Election And

  1. Call upon all political and community leaders in Kenya to unequivocally and immediately condemn violence and urge all Kenyans to refrain from violence and exercise restraint in this difficult time;

  2. Call for peace and especially the end of women and children suffering;

  3. Urge the political leaders of Kenya to engage in constructive dialogue and to accept the offers of assistance from the African Union;

  4. Call for the immediate stopping of the road blocks so that humanitarian aid will be able to reach those most in need;

  5. And offer the support of DUA member parties in mediating a positive way forward.
